About

A popular subtropical subshrub, *Aeonium arboreum* is known for its striking, dense rosettes of leaves and its large, showy yellow inflorescences that appear in the spring.

Field notes

Morphology

The plant grows as a less branched subshrub, reaching heights up to 2 meters. Its leaves form flattened rosettes with diameters ranging from 10 to 25 centimeters. The individual leaf blades are obovate to oblate lanceolate, measuring 130 to 380 mm long and 25 to 115 mm wide. The glossy leaf surface is typically green, often with purple coloration, and the plant produces conical to ovate inflorescences with bright yellow flowers.

Distribution & habitat

It is endemic to the western Canary Islands, including Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria. Populations found elsewhere, such as the Iberian Peninsula or Moroccan coast, are likely neophytes.

Cultivation notes

This species thrives in sunny or slightly shaded locations and prefers weathered volcanic soil. The purple cultivar 'Zwartkop' and the variegated form 'variegatum' are popular cultivars.
