About

This large, striking sundew, *Drosera magnifica*, is notable for being the largest New World species of the genus and was the first plant species discovered through social media images. It features an unusual candelabrum-shaped inflorescence.

Morphology

The plant can develop stems up to 120 cm in length, with a full specimen reaching over 150 cm. It also features a striking candelabrum-shaped inflorescence, composed of multiple cymes.

Distribution & habitat

Endemic to Pico do Padre Ângelo (1,500–1,530 m asl) in eastern Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil, growing among sandstone outcrops in herbaceous and shrubby vegetation.

History & etymology

The species was first discovered in 2012 by orchid grower Reginaldo Vasconcelos via a Facebook image, and formally described a year later by Paulo Gonella.
