About

A rare, perennial species, *Drosera quartzicola* is notable for its association with white quartz gravel and its restricted habitat within the Serra do Cipó region. It is considered one of the rarest of the Brazilian *Drosera* species.

Morphology

The plant forms a rosette of leaves, which are 0.7–4 cm long, sometimes emerging on a short stem about 4 cm tall. It is found growing in silica sands.

Distribution & habitat

Endemic to the Serra do Cipó in central Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil, at an elevation of 1,100–1,350 m.

History & etymology

First collected in the early 1990s, but formally recognized and published as a new species in 2011 by Rivadavia and Gonella.

Conservation

Proposed listing as critically endangered by the authors due to its limited populations and frequent human disturbance.
