About

This genus includes over 120 species of flowering, stemless, evergreen epiphytic perennials, with many species cultivated for their vibrant bracts, such as the notable *Guzmania lingulata* (scarlet star).

Field notes

Distribution & habitat

Native to Brazil, southern Mexico, Central America, and northern and western South America, found at altitudes up to 3,500 m in Andean rainforests.

Cultivation notes

These epiphytes can be propagated easily from offsets and do well when tied to pieces of bark with roots bound into sphagnum moss. They require warm temperatures and relatively high humidity, but must be protected from root rot caused by excessive wetness and cold.

History & etymology

The genus is named after Anastasio Guzmán, a Spanish-Ecuadorian pharmacist and naturalist.
