About
The class *Lycopodiopsida* includes lycophytes, which are distinguished by their microphyllous leaves and lateral sporangia. While many species are small, their extinct relatives formed massive, tree-like forests during the Carboniferous period, contributing significantly to coal deposits.

Morphology
They possess microphylls and reproduce by means of spores borne in sporangia on the sides of the stems at the bases of the leaves. Some groups form strobili, and certain relatives exhibit features like bark, cambium, and wood.
History & etymology
Fossils of the group first appear in the Silurian period, with *Baragwanathia longifolia* being one of the earliest identifiable species. The group evolved roots independently from the rest of the vascular plants.
