History & etymology

The specific epithet *barcelonae* honors Julie F. Barcelona, who discovered the species in February 2014. She discovered it alongside Danilo Tandang and Pieter B. Pelser.

Conservation

The species was informally assessed as Critically Endangered due to its occurrence in a single location. It faces threats from poaching, habitat degradation, slash-and-burn agriculture, and illegal logging operations.
