Borneo Exotics — N. dactylifera
About
This species, *Nepenthes dactylifera*, is notable for its distinct finger-like appendage beneath the pitcher lid, a key diagnostic trait that separates it from the widely-used *N. fusca* complex. It is an intermediate-climate grower, making it an excellent introduction to the *fusca* complex for collectors.
Field notes
Distribution & habitat
Endemic to Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, where it grows as an epiphyte or terrestrial climber in mossy forest, occupying an intermediate altitudinal band of 300–1200 m above sea level.
Cultivation notes
It is an intermediate-climate grower that tolerates warmer days and milder nights than strict highland species. It appreciates bright diffused light, high humidity (70–95%), and an airy, moisture-retentive media such as live sphagnum with perlite and bark.
History & etymology
Described by Jebb & Cheek in 2013, the name references the finger-like (dactyl-) filamentous appendage beneath the pitcher lid, a key diagnostic character.
