A robust, terrestrial subscandent shrub, *Nepenthes diatas* is notable for its woody peristome, distinguishing it from related species like *N. singalana*. It is endemic to the montane scrub and mossy forest of northern Sumatra.

Morphology
The plant is a terrestrial subscandent shrub growing up to 2.5 metres tall. Its leaves are thinly coriaceous and sessile, measuring about 9.5–17 cm long by 2.5–3.5 cm wide, while the leaves of its climbing stems are oblanceolate. The fruit valves measure 27–32 by 3–4 mm.
Distribution & habitat
Endemic to Aceh in northern Sumatra, specifically at the summit area of Gunung Bandahara, growing in montane scrub and mossy forest at elevations of 2,400–2,600 metres.
History & etymology
Formally described in 1997 by Matthew Jebb and Martin Cheek in their monograph "A skeletal revision of Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae)". The epithet derives from Indonesian di atas, meaning "above," referring to its endemic status to the northern part of Sumatra and its montane distribution.
