About

The dusky pitcher-plant, *Nepenthes fusca*, is a notable climbing species endemic to Borneo, characterized by its robust, cylindrical lower pitchers and petiolate, coriaceous leaves. It is often found in mossy forest habitats, sometimes reaching impressive heights.

Morphology

The leaves are petiolate and coriaceous, with an obovate-oblong lamina up to 15 cm long by 6 cm wide. The petiole is grooved and bears narrow wings forming a semi-amplexicaul sheath. Lower pitchers are cylindrical, typically reaching 20 cm in height and 4 cm in width, and feature a pair of fringed wings on the ventral surface.

Distribution & habitat

Endemic to Borneo, found throughout a wide altitudinal range and primarily growing in mossy forest.

History & etymology

First collected by Frederik Endert on October 12, 1925, from Mount Kemul in East Kalimantan, at 1,500 m. It was formally described in 1928 by B. H. Danser, who based his description on Endert's specimen.
