About
This large, striking montane pitcher plant is notable for the prominent reddish stripes adorning the peristomes of both its upper and lower pitchers. *Nepenthes malayensis* is endemic to the eastern mountains of Peninsular Malaysia, where it is found growing on moss banks or humus accumulated on rocks.

Morphology
Mature plants can grow pitchers up to 35 cm tall with a volume around 800 mL. The species has cylindrical to broadly angular stems and finely pubescent leaves, pitchers, and tendrils. The pitchers are stout to broad-cylindrical, slightly constricting in the middle and below the peristome.
Distribution & habitat
Eastern mountains of Peninsular Malaysia, specifically around 800–1,000 m above sea level.
Ecology
The species is non-terrestrial, exclusively growing on humus accumulated on rocks or moss banks on tree branches. It is a large carnivorous plant.
History & etymology
First sighted in 2018 by local nature photographers Dome Nikong and Mohamad Alias Shakri. The formal description was published in Kew Bulletin in 2020. The epithet 'malayensis' signifies its endemism to Malaya, or Peninsular Malaysia.
Conservation
Assessed as critically endangered (CR) by the IUCN criteria.
