*Nepenthes sanguinea* is a large and vigorous pitcher plant notable for its variable pitchers that range in color from green and yellow to striking orange and red, making it a popular specimen for collectors.
Field notes
Morphology
The pitchers are variable in size, ranging from 10–30 cm tall, and display colors that vary from green and yellow to orange and red, often speckled with its two main colors.
Distribution & habitat
Native to Peninsular Malaysia and southernmost Thailand, growing at altitudes between 300–1,800 metres.
Cultivation notes
This highland pitcher plant can be grown on a bright windowsill or in partly shaded areas outside, or in a large terrarium. It must be protected from frost.
History & etymology
The species was brought to Victorian Britain around 1847 by Thomas Lobb, a Cornish plant hunter and botanist, via the Veitch Nurseries.
