The olive, *Olea europaea*, is a subtropical evergreen tree renowned for its fruit, which is a drupe used to produce olive oil. It is the type species for the genus *Olea* and is widely cultivated throughout the Mediterranean Basin.

Originating in Asia Minor, it is abundant throughout the Mediterranean Basin, with wild subspecies in Africa and western Asia.
