Morphology
The species has large, flat leaves with sticky upper and undersides, and its flowers are typically zygomorphic. Varieties differ primarily in flower color, with forms ranging from blue to white, and dark purple flowers also existing in cultivation.
Distribution & habitat
Native to the Mexican state of Oaxaca, specifically at an altitude of 688 meters (2260 feet).
Ecology
The sticky mucilage secreted by trichomes on the leaves traps prey. The plant is tropical and enters dormancy when moisture is lacking.
Cultivation notes
It thrives in a well-drained soil medium and can be propagated easily by seed or by leaf cutting.
History & etymology
The species was discovered by Alfred Lau and described by the botanist Hans Luhrs. It was previously classified as *Pinguicula ayautla*.
