About

A small, dwarf butterwort, *Pinguicula pumila* is notable for its tiny, rosette-forming leaves and its native habitat in the sandy soils of the southeastern United States.

Field notes

Morphology

The plant forms a small rosette of leaves, rarely exceeding 3/4 of an inch (20 mm) across. The leaves feature inward curling margins and the upper surface is covered in numerous tiny hairs with glands at their tip that secrete small drops of mucilage. It produces single white to pale violet flowers on stalks measuring 6-8 inches (150–200 mm) high.

Distribution & habitat

Native to the southeastern United States, found in moist, sandy soil in pinelands and savannas, extending from the southeastern US into the great plains to Oklahoma.

Ecology

Insects become trapped in the numerous sticky glands covering the leaves, after which the plant secretes enzymes to digest them, assimilating organic nitrogen and other nutrients.
