Field notes
Morphology
Evergreen trees reaching 5–40 m tall, with bipinnate to tripinnate leaves, and panicles of large bell-shaped flowers that are white, pink, pale purple, or yellow, measuring 5–7 cm in diameter.
Cultivation notes
The species is useful as an informal screen (requiring aggressive pruning after flowering) or can be trained into a single trunk (cinturing before flowering to maximize flower production and reduce crown after flowering).
History & etymology
The genus is named after Jacob Cornelis Matthieu Radermacher, an 18th-century Dutch naturalist who cataloged much of the flora of Java and Sumatra.
